“Why Do I Always Feel Like I Have Nothing To Wear?”
The concept feels like it’s just become an accepted way of life. A full closet with nothing to wear.
But I think if we start to work backwards, we can figure out how we got here. This is what I do with my clients, since I don’t see their closets until they’re already frustrated, overwhelmed, and ready to give up.
As we go through each item together, I’ll ask them questions like:
“How did this piece end up in your closet?'“
“Where or how did you picture yourself wearing this?”
And after working with enough women, the answer becomes pretty clear. We end up with a full closet when we go shopping without a plan. What usually happens is that we end up shopping on impulse.
Does this sound familiar?
We’re either out with friends or we’re online shopping, and we’re picking up things that look cute. Things that maybe we know we need, but we haven’t really taken the time to think about it.
So, for example, you might have heard that you need a t-shirt. T-shirts are a great basic to have, but let’s take it a step further. Are you looking for a t-shirt with structure or are you looking for something drapey? Do you prefer a crew neck or a v-neck? What color t-shirt are you looking for?
All these questions usually aren’t considered when we go shopping. So when we go out, we pick up the first thing we see, either based on price or if it looks cute.
When we do this over and over again, we end up with enough clothes to fill our closets, but nothing that actually works together.
We’re shopping without a vision, so when we go to get dressed, none of the pieces work together to create the look that we actually want. Before you go shopping, come up with a plan. Create a vision that you want for your style and then go after the pieces that will create that.
No more random buying. No more purchasing things just because they’re on sale. Instead, stock your wardrobe based on a vision. Think about how you want to feel in your clothes and build your closet to support that.
